Our ocean within

Many find craniosacral therapy difficult to explain with words; it is much easier to get someone on the couch so they can get a felt body sense of what the therapy entails. However, from a spreading the word point of view, this is not that practical!!

All healthy, living tissues subtly 'breathe' with the motion of life - a phenomenon that produces rhythmic impulses which can be palpated by sensitive hands. A visionary man, Dr Sutherland, undertook many years of research during which he demonstrated the existence of this motion and eventually concluded it is produced by the body's inherent life force, which he referred to as the Breath of Life.

One of the best analogies to explain how craniosacral therapy works is that of the ocean; after all we are made up of mostly water.  We are also affected by the cycles of the moon. In craniosacral terms, we work with the Three Tides within:

The eddies on the surface
CRI, or cranial rhythmic impulse, is the most outermost or superficial unfoldment of the Breath of Life.  It can be felt as a slight rocking of parts of the body in response to deeper forces acting upon them. To me, it often times feels like swirling eddies on a pool, where some inertia has changed the flow of the waters.  Clients may experience heat or denseness in these eddies during a craniosacral session. Some may also feel an unwinding or lengthening as the inertia is released.

Dropping beneath the waves
The mid-tide holds the potency that is a fundamental expression of our health.  This subtle inner breathing of cells and tissues is an expression of the deeper ordering forces of the Breath of Life in the body. Often I will experience the mid-tide as an electrical charge throughout the body.  Clients describe shooting sensations up the length of their body or bubbles tickling them within.

The ocean floor
The long tide is the subtlest manifestation of our life force, it carries the essential ordering matrix which is always available to us. Here, down on the ocean floor there is a state of pure stillness where our deepest nature resides. During a session, touching on the long tide with a client is a complete privilege: time slows, space expands, everything feels connected, the source of all healing potential feels present.  I love it!

So I hope this gives you a felt sense of the three tides and the ocean within.  If you're intrigued, you can always come for a free taster session!
